The Chinese Character 囚 represents a Human 人 in a Mouth 口 in the pictograph. It can be interpreted as a human being imprisoned in a square cage or a human being under the thumb of others’ evaluation and living in others’ words.

Usually, in Chinese Culture, most people evaluate and distinguish others by the Confusion Feudal ethical code (封建礼教) which uses the so-called moral principles to judge and standardize individual behaviours and thoughts. By applying those norms in people’s daily life, the hierarch can easily eliminate individual differences to achieve collective harmony and grasp the power of discourse.

In this project, I will use 囚 as a symbol to show the plight of women in secular society, and the materialization of women to criticize feudal ethical code and patriarchal society.
